Welcome to the show: Fur wearing celebrities

It is undeniable that today’s youth represent a celebrity orientated society. For better or for worse, what celebrities and prominent figures say and do has an influence on the behavior of those who follow them keenly. No where is this more self-evident than in popular trends in fashion. The glamour of movie stars and their choice of fashion enjoy a symbiotic relationship: just as a celebrity is elevated by their chose of garments, fashion trends are elevated by the celebrities. And certain fashion trends may even prove to be more significant in cultivating their celebrity. Take real fur fashion, for example. There is something about Marilyn Monroe’s fox coats and mink cuffs that not only complemented her diva personality, but enhanced it.

Real furs have long been a symbol of elitism in not only the fashion world, but in popular imagination. Considering its hefty price tag, real fur clothes and accessories reflect an element of lavishness, luxury, security, and importance. From that perspective, fur fashion and celebrities wearing fur are a perfect marriage, and one that is not likely to be divorced as suddenly as many Hollywood marriages. Celebrities wearing fur carries symbolic significance in conveying their elegance, awareness of trends, and their opulence. However, fur fashion may behave as a double edged sword at times: it may elevate the celebrity or, given its controversial nature, it may undermine their star power.

Kate Moss Fur

Any individual with celebrity know-how is aware that supermodel Kate Moss is among the staunchest supporters of fur. The fur wearing model’s love for fur accessories has, however, escalated to a much publicized spat with her vegan boyfriend, Jamie Hince. According to celebrity news websites, their arguments have been largely based on their disagreements on their respective attitudes towards fur wearing. Moss has long been a supporter of all things fur, and this fur wearing behavior extends beyond what she wears on her back: it includes rabbit fur bed sheets or coyote fur handbags. Moss is often regarded to be an icon in the fashion industry which highlights that regarding fashion and real fur, there is no schism between the two. But, outside of this fur fashion world, real furs can be a very controversial subject to celebrity.

Take Anna Wintour, for example. As editor of the high-end fashion bible known as Vogue, Wintour’s celebrity to her critics has largely been defined by her defiance to promote anti-fur fashion advertisements, as well as her open endorsement of fur as an important part of fashion and celebrity. “As long as fur is still fashion,” she has asserted concerning celebrities wearing fur, “Vogue will cover it!” Many of her speaking engagements have been interrupted by anti-fur fashion activists who disrupt and taunt Wintour’s support of real furs as shameful and ethically vile as they view the suffering of a creature is worth looking good for a night on the town to be an absurd notion. Yet, such denunciations highlight an odd irony to celebrities fur: Even when it is censured, the celebrity’s support base may be elevated because they epitomize defiance to the status quo. Particularly where it concerns fashion, what is viewed to be “fashionable” is a combination between what is accepted by the majority and a sense of independence from the norm. As a voice of popular fashion and supporter of celebrities fur, Wintour’s celebrity has energized her fan base and given credence to her fashion do’s and don’ts.  Fur can not only give the boost in appearance for celebrities, but they can also create the celebrity themselves.

Sex and The City Furs

Although the controversial figures and issues of fur wearing celebrities have been explored, most often fur fashion is not the story, but merely the complement of the celebrity. During its run on television, Sex and the City did monster television ratings and had a global following. The show that followed four ladies and their romantic escapades with a New York City backdrop also prominently featured their wardrobes as key secondary characters. What these characters wore mirrored the popular trends in fashion and in many episodes, fur was featured prominently. Such subtlety engrains certain notions and attitudes towards fur fashion in not only celebrities, but in the viewers too. Real furs were cool for these characters, so it was cool for its fans too.

Celebrities fur images of Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez, John Lennon, and the Olsen Twins sporting fur clothes and accessories confirms that fur is very much in vogue in the fashion world. Fur fashion reflects a sense of timelessness and status to their appearance. As a result, it is only appropriate that those celebrities wearing fur reflect their own worth as being celebrities. Today, fashion has been elevated to such a level that wearing fur has been accepted to be an honest reflection of your wealth, influence, and star power. Disregarding the merits or lack thereof of fur fashion, it is because of this symbolism that real fur fashion and celebrities fur are not parting anytime soon.
