Imagine somebody was to tell you to choose between a death by stoning or one by a gunshot, if you will excuse the example. Any choice there? Of course not; the choice has already been made for you. The same applies when somebody has to choose between natural fur and faux fur; absolutely nothing to chose. The point of this article is therefore not to prove that natural fur is superior to faux fur. That is far too obvious, pun intended. The intent however is to point out some of the reasons why natural fur is better than faux fur, and why buying natural fur over faux fur is the most reasonable option.
Let’s start with an offensive approach before we get defensive, if we must. Faux fur is basically synthesised from dangerous chemicals that may cause severe allergies in some people as the very mild consequence. These chemicals can easily cause skin irritation and even skin cancer. Please do not groom your baby with these materials even if you yourself defy the warning. Secondly, it is ironic for advocates of environmental conservation to claim that faux fur is better off than natural fur. Why?

Faux fur
Natural fur decomposes naturally like anything natural; just like it would have decomposed when in a dead animal’s body. On the other hand, the materials used to make faux fur such as modacrylic polymers and blends of acrylic are totally impossible to decompose even intentionally. Most of the raw materials of faux fur are sourced from coal, petroleum, limestone and such materials and are therefore basic plastics. Like all plastics, these faux fur materials can never break down, at least not in less than forty years. Next time you need to answer a question on why natural fur is better than faux fur, simply put it this way, “Real fur is environmentally friendly”.
Among the most authentic reasons to buy natural fur over faux fur is durability. Fake fur lasts for some few years at most. Real furs on the other hand can be inherited by two generations of women in a family for instance. It can still be recycled, restyled and refashioned for yet another generation. Now tell me, do you need to illustrate the superiority of natural fur over faux fur any further?
Sample this. Go out there and try buying some fur. When you wear fake fur, it will feel very coarse and harsh on the skin. It always does. Though it looks similar to fur, the fabric is just like any other synthetic nylon with some neat rows on top. Try wearing a natural mink and you will know why Eskimos started wearing fur, real furs, hundreds of years ago. You will understand why the superiority of natural fur over faux fur is not even debatable.
Scientific research in the United States and Canada has shown that when it comes to combating cold during winter you have all the reasons to buy natural fur over faux fur. Natural fur can accumulate snow on its surface without melting. It can hold water without freezing even under refrigeration. Fake furs on the other hand can neither keep water from freezing under refrigeration nor snow from melting on their fibrous fur’s filaments. Natural fur is naturally a better cold insulator by far, again pun intended.

Luxurious Natural Fur
Let us now take this discussion on natural over faux fur to the defensive. The proponents of faux fur usually quote animal rights as the single motivation of their spirited anti-fur campaigns. Yet these same individuals hold meetings over bacon, eat beef for dinner, adore their cheese and can never live without the hamburger. These guys wear leather shoes and leather belts; they feed their children on fish fillets, and prefer ivory engagement rings to any other when they finally fall in love. Harvesting fur becomes the evil that is more inhumane that harvesting meat from animals. You are the most objective person here, so tell me, does that make sense?
It becomes heinous to buy a beautiful mink coat for your wonderful little girl from a farmer somewhere is rearing minks. Yet this farmer earns a living and a livelihood for his family by counting on your availability to buy the finished product. One of the defensive reasons to buy natural fur over faux fur is fact that a mink farming family down in Idaho is counting on you for the evening meal, for their medical bills and for their son’s education. Simple logic.
Let us use one of their arguments to illustrate the superiority of natural fur over faux fur. They say that animals reared for their fur and then their bodies are not used for anything else is inhuman. Ask yourself, do we raise cattle for their bones or for their meat? Do we rear poultry for the feathers or for their delicious flesh? So why is it wrong to use fur and throw away the meat if it is okay to eat the meat and throw away the bones? You buy natural fur because that is the product you wanted.
When you buy natural fur, you have the guarantee of cold insulation, of a durable garment and of a finer texture than any faux fur can guarantee. As we said in the beginning, there are a billion and one reasons to buy real furs over faux fur. That was not an exaggeration, was it?
